Chattanooga is a city that celebrates bridges and bridge builders. In 1891, Edwin Thacher developed a bridge to connect the city whose people, commerce and cultures were separated by the Tennessee River. As chief engineer of the Walnut Street Bridge, Edwin designed the iconic steel trusses that would create this unique structure spanning the river.
