Guilford County was originally formed in 1771 from slices of Rowan and Orange Counties. Named after the First Earl of Guilford, Francis North, the area was largely settled by Quakers. The battle of Guilford Court House, a major turning point in the American Revolution, was fought here. Greensboro is the county seat.
