Knox County is the youngest county in Maine, incorporated in 1860. It is located in the midcoast region of the state, with Rockland as its county seat. Camden, a well-known summer tourist destination, is also in Knox County.
Knox County's early economy was based on shipbuilding, lime processing, granite quarries, commercial fishing and lobstering. While some of these industries continue to flourish, its combination of mountains, rocky coast, islands, lighthouses, and blueberry fields have made Knox County popular for its recreational opportunities.
