The American game of football, not to be confused with soccer, which is called football in most other countries, is sometimes called "gridiron" in those countries in order to keep confusion to a minimum. The game is played by two teams, each made up of eleven players, whose goal is to advance the ball across the field to that team's goal. Football is a contact sport.
