Appaloosas come in a variety of coat patterns, some examples are leopard, snowflake, frost (or roan), and blanket. The other characteristics are mottled skin, striped hooves, and white sclera (readily apparent white around the iris). Appaloosas without mottled skin and one additional characteristic may show with a performance permit and will be identified with an N (for noncharacteristic) preceeding their registration number.
