Moses was saved from the order of the Pharaoh to kill all newborn Hebrew males when his mother and sister caused him to be put into a basket in the river and he was discovered by the daughter of Pharaoh. He was raised in Pharaoh's home with his mother as a nurse, and killed a slave-master who was beating a slave. Because of this, Pharaoh ordered his execution, and Moses ran away. Years later, God appeared to him and made him the leader of the Jews, and told him how he would get the Pharaoh to let his people go. He led them through the desert for forty years, delivered God's 10 Commandments to them, and led them through the parted Red Sea. He died before they reached the Land of Israel. According to tradition, he was also the author of the first five books of the bible.
