Mordecai, from the Tribe of Benjamin, adopted his cousin Esther, who was an orphan. He went with her when she married King Ahasuerus and became one who, according the the bible, "sat in the king's gate." He found out that the eunuchs were plotting to kill the king, and told Queen Esther, who saved the King. Haman the Agagite took exception to Mordecai's refusal to bow down before him and hatched a plan to kill Mordecai and all the Jews. Again, he found out about the plot and told Queen Esther, who prevented it by means of her husband.
