Philip, one of the original 12 apostles, was, according to the Gospel of John, from the city of Bethsaida, as were Andrew and Peter. He is the person credited with introducing Nathaniel to Jesus. Tradition tells us that he was sent with his sister Mariamme and Bartolomew to preach in Greece, Phrygia, and Syria. It is said that he converted the wife of the proconsul of Hierapolis, which enraged the proconsul who had Philip, Bartholomew, and Mariamme tortured. Philip and Bartholomew were then crucified upside down, and Philip is said to have preached from his cross. The crowd had Bartholomew released from the cross, but Philip insisted that they not release him, and he died there.
