Cornelius was a Roman centurion who was described as a God-fearer. While he was praying, an angel appeared to him and told him to send a messenger to ask Peter to come and preach to him. Simultaneously, Peter was given a vision that he should go with the messenger. Once Peter finished preaching to Cornelius, his family and friends, the Holy Spirit fell on them, as it had on the first Christians at Pentecost. The centurion and his friends began to speak in tongues. This was enough to convince Peter and other Jewish Christians to see that it was the will of God that Gentiles be brought into the Church.
