Bartholomew is among the original apostles in the Synoptic gospels, and as one of the witness of the Ascension. He is named ever time in the company of Philip, and there is no word in the bible as to what he himself did or where he went, although according to historian Eusebius of Caesarea, Bartholomew embarked upon a missionary journey to India after the Ascension, and that there he left a copy of the Gospel of Matthew. He is also traditionally known to bring the Word to Armenia. Tradition also tells us that he was martyred by being flayed alive and then crucified upside down.
