Reformation Day, a Christian holiday, is October 31 and commemorates the Reformation which began on this day in 1517, when Martin Luther posted a proposal at the doors of a church in Wittenberg, Germany. That proposal began the debate of the doctrine and practice of indulgences. The doors of this church functioned in the same fashion as today's bulletin board. This started a controversy over many of the doctrines and practices of the Catholic Church. Luther and his supporters were excommunicated in 1520, which is when the Lutheran tradition started.
