The Fourth of July is also called Independence Day in the United States, and it commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, which happened on July 4, 1776. Philadelphia celebrated the first time with public readings and bonfires. While the adoption was in July, the signing was not done until August 2 of that year. On July 4th, 1777, Congress was adjourned, and the Declaration was commemorated in Philadelphia with fireworks, bonfires, and bells.
