Benedict Arnold, the noted turncoat of the American Revolution, was born January 14, 1741. He was a general in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War, but after what he saw as personal insults from George Washington, he defected to the British Army. After his defection, but before leaving the Continental Army, he commanded West Point and tried to surrender it to the Royal Army. After that failure, he joined the King. While on the side of the colonists, his actions included the capture of Ft. Ticonderoga and the Battle of Saratoga. After the war, he and his wife moved to London where he died in 1801.
