Egyptian literature stretches back to the writings of Ancient Eqyptians who wrote on papyrus, walls, tombs, pyramids and obelisks. It includes early Christian and Islamic literature. Modern Egyptian literature includes Naguib Mahfouz, who won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1988. The first modern Eqyptian (and Islamic) novel is generally taken to be Zaynab by Muhammad Husayn Haykal, written in 1914.
