Phillis Wheatley was the pioneering African-American woman who helped establish the genre of African American literature. She was born in 1753 and was made a slave at age seven. She was purchased by the Wheatley family of Boston, who taught her to read and write and encouraged her to persevere with writing poetry. She died in 1784.
