English author, poet and playwright; born in 1885, died 1930.
His best known works include Sons and Lovers, Women in Love, and Lady Chatterley's Lover; although now valued for their modernist treatment of relationships and sexuality, his contemporaries regarded them as pornographic.
The eventual publication of Lady Chatterley's Lover in Britain, in 1960 by Penguin Books, led to a celebrated trial under the Obscene Publications Act of 1959.
