The best part of the resort for me was watching the joy my children had playing with the cats on the property near D.T Flemming Beach, next to the gear rental and small restaurant (forgot name). The Ritz staff feeds the cats who are all vaccinated and spayed neutered (explained to me by staff and all cats had missing "V" in their ears to indicate they had been immunized).
The cats were all super friendly and playing with them made my children so visibly happy. Every morning they would wake me up to go see them before it got too hot for the cats to be out. Thankfully, the mother or father cat must have known to help a fellow parent out, because they were always hanging out at the same spot where I could find them when my kids were "dying" to see them.
As a guest, I sincerely appreciate that the staff takes good care of the cats and hope they continue to do so as my children are already talking about seeing them next year. On a side note, I'm shocked how well behaved these cats were and how they don't bother anyone....with a small outdoor restaurant right there they don't even go near diners.
Other than this aspect that stood out...simply put, it's the Ritz Carlton. The staff, amenities, and experience was 1st rate.
Beautiful, clean, and luxurious. We enjoyed it. Our daughter loved the pools. When we were there, my daughter and I were the only in the pools. The emptiest pools on Hawaii island hotels/resorts we had ever been. Note: there was no real shark in the pool, only a huge shark float.
I have visited Ritz Carlton on 12/12 and dined in the restaurant of the Banyan Tree at the evening. We experienced the worst service from the restaurant: 1. Race discrimination: my husband tried to take picture for our table, and the nearby table customer called the manager to reported wrong facts which he didn't allow us to take photos saying we were blocking his view; no one said sorry to us. 2. The waiter didn't pay any attention when we asked him to separate checks for each couple, and made total wrong calculations for every each of them. We had to record each order in the back of check and asked for recalculation. No sorry being said at all. 3. When we asked for some clarification of desert, he was not patient at all and almost mad at us. Overall, comparing with prior stay in 2002, I was very unhappy with this restaurant service.
Top notch in every way. Friendly, helpful staff. Beautiful guest rooms. Great restaurants. You can't match the location, absolutely stunning. We spent 8 days and were treated like royalty the entire time.
