We charge a consultation fee to ensure that the potential client is serious about their case and so that it's not a waste of time for either the potential client and the attorney. Too often people who want a "free" consultation just want free advice and information. Moreover, if retained, the consultation fee is credited back to the client, so it ends up being a free consultation.
