Composers whose careers fall mainly between 1800 and 1910 are commonly defined as belonging to the Romantic Period. Preceded by the Classical Period; followed by the Modern Period (composers of the 20th and 21st centuries). However, the latter "boundaries" of the Romantic Period are particularly fluid. Prominent features include - the association of national identity with particular composers or styles (Sibelius and Finland; Dvorak and Smetana with Bohemia - roughly what is now the Czech Republic; Grieg and Norway; developing Russian, French, and Spanish styles); - the transition to the wide range of 20th century schools, styles, and developments. Some composers like Rachmaninoff "look back" to the Romantic Period, others such as Mahler and Richard Strauss perhaps "look forward" to the experimentation and exploration of new composition techniques of the 20th century.
