The Best of the Web '94
This is the Headquarters for the Best of the Web Awards, which aims to highlight those places which best show the quality, versatility, and power of the World Wide Web. This should serve two purposes:
Promote the Web to new/potential users by showing its highlights
Help information providers see what they can do with HTML/HTTP
The awards were selected via a two-month open nomination, and a two-week open voting period (i.e. they were not picked solely by me). The awards were first announced at the
International W3 Conference
in Geneva on May 26, 1994. The awards are now on permanent display here.
Here are the
1994 Awards
!
Congratulations to the winners! Just a couple notes:
There were 5100 total votes; most of the winners averaged around 100 votes.
I am making no claims that the winners are the absolute best services out there. Despite my best efforts, the democratic process still tends to favor popular sites, and ignore others (I'm sure many that were just as good did not even get nominated). However, the award recipients were just as deserving of recognition and praise as anyone else. I'm generally happy with the way it turned out.
Even though there was only one winner in each category, all of the nominees were excellent. I couldn't decide between them in most of the categories for my personal vote. They should all be used as examples for the rest of us to follow.
