Rugby union, a full contact team sport, is played with an oval-shaped ball on a field 100 meters in length and 70 meters in width. Two teams compete to score through H-shaped goals at the opposite ends of the field. Each competing team has 15 players on the field and 7 substitutes.

The sport's governing body is the International Rugby Board (IRB) and its six Regional Boards.
