The Deobandi are a Sunni revivalist movement which started in India, in reaction to British colonialism, when a group of Hanafi scholars founded Darul Aloom Deoband in 1866 as an Islamic seminary. They now also have a presence in Afghanistan, southen Africa, and the United Kingdom.
