A festival celebrating the birthday of the prophet Muhammad, which occurs in Rabi' al-awwal, the third month of the Islamic calendar. Shia and Sunni traditions observe different dates. Although it is widely celebrated, and a national holiday in most Muslim countries, there is scholarly debate whether the feast is permissible and positive, or a dangerous innovation.
