Isaac was the son of Abraham and Sarah, and the younger half brother of Ishmael. He was the father of Jacob and Esau, and the son who Abraham fathered when he was 100. He is the only patriarch whose name was not changed. He never left Canaan, having tried once but being told by God that he was not to leave. He is a type of Jesus Christ, as his father, Abraham, was willing to sacrifice him at God's command. Once Abraham showed his utter willingness to sacrifice him, God stopped the sacrifice.
