Cain was the murderer, having killed by his brother Abel in a pique of jealousy after God accepted Abel's sacrifice but eschewing Cain's. The narrative is in the Bible as well as the Qur'an, and also in the Dead Sea Scrolls. When God asked Cain where Abel was, Abel answered, "Am I my brother's keeper?" He was cursed to work hard with no fruits of his labor being yielded. He was also marked by God so that on one would kill him. He lived out his days in the Land of Nod, east of Eden.
