Theophilus means "lover of God" or "friend of God." Luke, when he wrote his Gospel and Acts of the Apostles, prefaced both with a salutation to Theophilus. In Luke, he writes, "...it seemed good also to me to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus..." and in Acts, he writes, "In my former book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach..."
