Shortly after the death and resurrection of Jesus, a Christian woman named Dorcas (or, in Hebrew, Tabitha) died in Joppa. Her body was being readied for burial when Simon Peter entered the nearby town of Lydda. Two friends of the now-dead Dorcas, went to Lydda to ask Peter to come to the house. Peter knelt and prayed for Dorcas, stood up and called her by name, and Dorcas rose from the dead.
