Category Description: Shortly before dawn on September 16, 1810, Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla rang the church bell, signaling the beginning of the war for independence. This is the event which is celebrated in Mexico and by Mexicans around the world as Mexican Independence Day. Although often confused with Cinco de Mayo, this is an entirely different celebration, and one unconnected.
