Halloween, originally Hallowe'en, is the observance celebrated on October 31 by involvement in activities including carving jack-o-lanterns, bonfires, costume parties, trick-or-treating, and visiting "haunted houses". It is similar to the ancient Celtic celebration of the end of the harvest, Samhain, which was traditionally a time when the ancient pagans took stock of supplies and slaughtered livestock for winter.
