Black History Month, celebrated in the United States and in Canada, is a commemoration of important events and people in the history of the African diaspora. Those in the United Kingdom celebrate it in the month of October. The commemoration began in 1926 with what historian Carter G. Woodson called "Negro History Week". He chose the second week of February, which was the week of the birthdays of two Americans who most influenced the social condition of African Americans: Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass.
