Celebrated on the third Saturday in May, Armed Forces in the United States was first celebrated in 194i, as the result of the consolidation of all branches of the service under the Department of Defense. The purpose of the day is to honor Americans serving in all of the country's services: Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marines, and Navy.
