Lyndon Baines Johnson (August 27, 1908 – January 22, 1973) was the 36th President. He served in both the Senate and the House, and then in the office of the Vice President before ascending to the presidency when John F. Kennedy was assassinated on November 22, 1963. He instituted the Great Society, the "War on Poverty," and escalated the country's involvement in the Vietnam War. He died after suffering his third heart attack on January 22, 1973.
