John Calvin Coolidge, Jr. (July 4, 1872 – January 5, 1933) was the 30th President of the United States. He presided over the country from 1923 to1929. For reasons unknown to the general public, he dropped his first name and went by "Calvin Coolidge," while many called him "Silent Cal." Prior to his presidency, he was the governor of Massachusetts, and it was his actions as governor during the Boston police strike of 1919 which brought him to national attention. He was vice president to President Warren G. Harding, and assumed the presidency upon Harding's death.
