Category Description: Chester Alan Arthur (October 5, 1829 – November 18, 1886) was 21st President and a member of the Republican Party. Prior to his election, he served as vice president under James Garfield. Garfield was shot in July of 1881 but lingered until September, at which time Arthur was finally sworn in as president. He was never elected President.
