n October 17, 1989, at 5:04 pm, a 7.1 earthquake occurred in the San Francisco Bay Area. The epicenter was in Forest of Nisene Marks State Park in Santa Cruz County. 63 people died, and two major bridges collapsed, those being the San Francisco Bay Bridge and the Cypress Street Viaduct on the Nimitz Freeway in Oakland. The city was without power for days, and the cleanup took months.
