Aquaculture is the farming of aquatic livestock as well as plants to supplement natural supply. It is also referred to as aquafarming and is describable a direct opposite of commercial fishing. Aquaculture covers the raising and cultivating of both freshwater and saltwater organisms including fish, mollusks, crustaceans, seaweeds, oysters, and algae. Aquaculture in marine environments is given the term "mariculture."
