Founded in 1937, Cardinal Stritch University, situated in Milwaukee, is a private Roman Catholic university. It was founded by the Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi as a place to train nuns to be teachers and was originally named St. Clare College. In 1946, it was renamed in honor of Samuel Cardinal Stritch, the archbishop of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee. It became a university in 1997.
