Door County is named in honor of the dangerous strait between the Door Peninsula and Washington Island. This strait is the final resting place for uncounted shipwrecks. It was called Porte des Morts Passage, which means Door to the Way to Death, or Death's Door. The county seat is Sturgeon Bay.
