The city of Wisconsin Rapids is the county seat of Wood County. Settled in the 1830s, it was previously known as Centralia on the west side of the river and Gran Rapids on the east side. The two cities merged in 1900, and due to confusion with Grand Rapids, Michigan, the name was changed in 1920.
