The city of Milwaukee, which is situated on the southwestern shore of Lake Michigan, is the county seat of Milwaukee County. It was incorporated in 1846 and was named for the Algonquian word Millioke, meaning Beautiful Land. It has been known by variants of that word, Melleorki, Milwacky, Mahn-a-waukie, Milwarck, and Milwaucki, and in the 1830s, a newspaper changed it to Milwaukee, and it has retained that spelling ever since.
