The unincorporated community of Institute, West Virginia is located in Kanawha County and is home to West Virginia State University, Kanawha Valley Community and Technical College, as well as the prehistoric Shawnee Reservation Mound. It is also the site of the August 2008 chemical plant explosion at the Praxair Services, Inc. facility.
