The University of Richmond is a nonsectarian private university in Richmond, Virginia. It is primarily residential undergraduate university, and was founded by Virginia Baptists in 1830 as a seminary for men. During the Civil War, Richmond College was used as a hospital for Confederate troops, and later was used as a Union barracks. By the time the war was over, the college was unable to continue as a school as it was bankrupt, but in 1866, James Thomas donated $5,000 to be used to reopen the college.
