James Madison University is a public university situated in Harrisonburg, Virginia. It was founded as the State Normal and Industrial School for Women at Harrisonburg in 1908. In 1914, the name was changed to the State Normal School for Women at Harrisonburg. In 1924, it was renamed yet again to State Teachers College at Harrisonburg, and in 1938, it was named Madison College after James Madison, the fourth president of the United States. In 1976 it was renamed to its current name, James Madison University.
