The College of William and Mary, in Williamsburg, Virginia, is the second-oldest institution of higher education in the United States. It was founded in 1693 when King William III and Queen Mary II, who jointly ruled Great Britain, issued a Royal Charter. Among those educated at the College are Thomas Jefferson, James Monroe, John Tyler, all presidents of the United States, 16 of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, and Supreme Court Chief Justice John Marshall. George Washington got his surveyor's certificate from William and Mary.
