Averett University is a private college in Danville, Virginia, near the North Carolina border. It was chartered as "Union Female College" in 1859, and became affiliated in 1910 with the Baptist General Association. Its name was changed to Averett College in 1917, and it finally became a coed 4-year college in 1969, followed by the renaming to its current name in 2001.
