Stafford County, whose county seat is Stafford, was established in 1664 and named in honor of Staffordshire, England. Pocahontas was kidnapped at Marlborough Point in the eastern part of the county. While there, she converted to Christianity and married an English settler named John Rolfe in April 1614.
