The independent city of Williamsburg was originally called Middle Plantation and was a fortified settlement situated on the high ground between the James and York Rivers in 1632. Its name was changed after it became the capital of the Virginia Colony. It received a royal charter as a city in 1722, and was the center of political events in Virginia leading to the American Revolution. It is famous as the site of Colonial Williamsburg, the restored historic area of the city
