Staunton, an independent city within Augusta County is the county seat. Founded in 1747 and incorporated in 1871, it became an independent city in 1902. It was originally called Augusta Courthouse but was renamed in honor of Lady Rebecca Staunton, wife of Governor William Gooch. Staunton was the first city in the world to adopt a city manager form of government, and is the birthplace of Woodrow Wilson, who became the 28th president of the United States.
