On Captain John Smith's map, an area noted to be called Appamatuck is modern-day Petersburg, which is now an independent city. When the English arrived in the area in the early 1600s, there was a large Powhatan settlement there, but in 1645, the settlers had established Fort Henry there, and Petersburg grew from there. The famous Battle of Petersburg was fought there in 1781.
