Lynchburg, an independent city, is physically located in the middle of Appomattox, Amherst, Bedford, and Campbell Counties. Settled in 1757, it was named in honor of its founder, John Lynch, who started Lynch's Ferry when he was just 17. Lynchburg was the capital of Virginia for 4 days in April 1865 between the fall of Richmond and the fall of the Confederacy.
